An Open Letter to my 2016 Self

With new year - new me movement in its full swing, which I absolutely love, I want to share my best-kept tradition. It's about writing letters. I used to write letters (anonymously) to the people I spent my preceding year with. They weren't supposed to be posted, though.
Now I am going to do the same for my own self. I will write a letter for me, from a person who's in 2015 - to a person who'll be in 2016. It's a really sentimental thing to do, but I'd be happy to re-read it after the year ends and see how well I listened to my own self.

Dear Noor Unnahar,
I'm so glad to see how enthusiastic you are for 2016. It has always been so fun to welcome the new year with great zeal and tons of plans, isn't it?

There is a lot to do. But I want to set a few things ahead you before you start:
Don't worry about making things work. Do what you are required to do. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. If you never try new things, you'll never know if it could work or not. Life is unpredictable. Don't wait for the perfect opportunity to come your way. Make your way through difficulties to unseen/unknown opportunities.

As we grow older, things become harder to handle. Like, your friends will, somehow, become strangers. Strangers will become your friends. You'll be surprised by the behavior of the people you'll come across, for the rest of the year. When such things happen, don't worry. Welcome everyone as they come & wave goodbyes happily when some people decide to leave. Never close doors for anyone as changes are inevitable. Neither you nor anyone else can control them.

Focus on the bright side of the life. For life is pretty short, so are the good moments. You never know whether a good opportunity is slipping away as you mourn over an old memory. A small act as chasing sunshine might fill your heart with happiness, so you better not let this go. Wink.

Don't be disappointed by the failures. You can't avoid them. But you can check where you did wrong and it will help you avoid them in future. It's an opportunity in disguise. Wheez!

Read good books & share them with everyone you meet. Reading isn't only healthy, but it also takes your mind to new and fantastic places. Don't let your busy schedule eat up this hobby - it's a necessity. Keep it in your mind.

Take more cool photos, make art and beautiful things like pretty blogs and creative wall posters, laugh a little more, and don't let negativity ruin your days.

Live your life to fullest, but never compromise on the traditions, religion and rights. Make sure you don't hurt anyone, intentionally. Trust me, you will never be completely successful if your success is based on someone's tears and woes.

I hope you get to learn new things and become a better person in 2016 - even better than your 2015 self.

With love,
Your 2015 Self

If you were to write a letter for your future self, what would you write in it?

  1. I love this idea so much! I would need to think long and hard about what to write to myself, and probably try not to overthink it too much, which is something I'm prone to, sometimes. I love your advice of welcoming people as they come and waving goodbye as they go, that's life exactly and we shouldn't get hung up about it. And YES to living life to the fullest and not compromising on anything :)

  2. I really love this, especially the part about success not being worth it if you have to bring someone down in the process. So many people put their happiness above others to the point that they fail to realize how much pain they cause. Here's wishing you accomplish everything you hope to in 2016!

  3. "Don't let negativity ruin your days" Amen to that girlie! I need to get on board with that one as well :)

  4. Such a fun idea...I think a letter to myself would be a great way to actually hold myself accountable for the goals I set this year!

  5. Awww, what a beautiful post Noor. Makes me tingle in my heart. I love writing letters to my selves, future, past or present. It's an assurance to know you (any you) will be alright even it wasn't. Noor, this is amazing and you're amazing. It's so true, we should strive to be better people this year.

As I said countless of times, have a happy 2016 <3

  6. its such a great idea to write a letter to yourself. I feel like a lot of people focus on looking ahead when a new year comes around and set goals and make resolutions but it is so nice to see you being self reflective which I believe is key in living a well-balanced life! good luck in 2016 and excited to read your blog in the coming year :)

  9. Living to the fullest for sure! I do this each year as well, except I use one of those email things, and it sends it to me in a year. It's a nice surprise, because I can never remember exactly which day it'll come.
